Skin Atony (Sagging)

Skin Atony is defined by a sagging or drooping of the skin.  It is most common on the lower half of the face, but can also be present in the brow area. Choose professional treatments and products that firm, tighten, lift, hydrate and stimulate.  Ingredients to look for: Sweet Almond Oil & Wheat Proteins lift & firm.  Aosa Algae protects collagen & elastin. Glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s) hydrate. Caffeine, Coenzyme A & Chinese Herb Exract address what is commonly referred to as “Turkey Neck” by stimulating cell energy & draining idle fat cells, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) acts as an anti-oxidant. Matrixyl (Palmitoyl Pentapeptide) reduces fine lines/wrinkles. Consult with your Esthetician to select the products best suited for you. If you don’t have an Esthetician, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

Hormonal Aging

Hormones cause significant changes in the skin; however, there are specific ingredients that will address each of these changes.  The skin becomes more fragile, making it drier and more dehydrated and the barrier function becomes impaired.  Diminished estrogen causes the skin to lose tone.  Increased testosterone causes facial hair and breakouts. The solution:  Use products that contain active ingredients that redensify fragile skin (Padina Pavonica stimulates calcium production & water reservoirs), alleviate dry skin (Soy & Wild Yam), hydrate and restore barrier function (Collaxyl stimulates water reservoirs & the skin repair process). Products must also contain ingredients that mimic the action of estrogen (Iris Florentina) in the skin to preserve the tone and regulate the extra testosterone, thus decreasing facial hair and hormonal breakouts. Consult with your Esthetician to select the products best suited for you. If you don’t have an Esthetician, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

Style & Leisure

Are you known to morph from a summer social butterfly into a hibernating bear during the colder months? Not that it’s amiss, it’s actually indicative of our nature to do so. The key is in keeping one’s expression intact through the shift in personal tones and seasons.

What’s your style approach in keeping warm? If you’re like most, you likely have that pair of favorite sweats or two that provide comfort on chilly days. Cozy and nostalgic, yes, but better are leisurewear separates that stay consistent with what you wear socially.

Style should rarely be compromised for comfort. Those winter evenings that
consist of curling up with a good book, netflix, board games, hot chocolate and dark liquor pair up great with chunky tunics and leggings, casual oversized sweater dresses, and coordinating pieces made with micromodal fabrics.  The fellas can keep it fresh with updated thermals and house cardigans with track trousers that provide more authority in style and fit.

Save the sweat suits for the gym and opt to lounge in silhouettes that accentuate your frame with fabrics that compliment your shape and comfort level.  Looking good is the best compliment to feeling good, no matter what time of year it is.

Fall Shades

As we tick tock into November, setting clocks back and thermostats up, we get more into the groove of fall with a feast of style options to serve our dapper fancies.

Due to the year-round moderate temperatures on the West Coast, Los Angeles especially, natives aren’t commonly seasoned to a functional fall wardrobe compared to their counterparts east of the Mississippi. For the latter, it is an exhibition of trench coats, double-breasted varieties, cashmere scarves, leather gloves, and a plethora of boot styles among other items that lend an instant, stylish embrace of the season.

Since the same investment on layering items is not typical for the Californian, a chic twist to paying homage to autumn’s rise would be by virtue of the color palettes associated with the foods we eat during this time of year. Incorporating warm yellows and oranges, deep greens, dulcet browns and crimson reds into one’s daily attire provides a great taste of the season’s aura.

For those who prefer sticking with black or more neutral palettes, try introducing color with accessories to spice up any basic ensemble.

However you choose to rock your epicurean shades,

indulge with your options, allowing the flavors and textures of the season to provide as your muse.

There Is An Art To Properly Cleansing Your Face

The majority of people are not getting their faces clean. They throw a little cleanser on, lightly move it around with their fingertips, then rinse it off.  And they are only doing this once a day. To ensure that your face is properly cleansed a pH balanced cleanser (milk or gel) for your skin type and/or skin condition should be used twice a day.  If you wear make-up, a double cleanse should be done at night. The first cleanse will remove oil & dirt, the second cleanse will remove make-up. A washcloth or facial sponge should be used to remove the cleanser to ensure that your face is really clean.  Think of it this way…would your floors get clean without using a mop? Remember to launder your washcloth or facial sponge in hot water at least twice a week to kill bacteria.

Exfoliate!

The most underestimated step in the home skin care regimen is exfoliation.  In addition to being the number two anti-aging product, dermatological studies have shown that proper exfoliation aids in getting rid of pre-cancerous surface skin cells.  There are three types of exfoliants:  Enzymes, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) and mechanical (scrubs). Enzymatic exoliants are good for sensitive skin & for use around the eyes.  Hydroxy Acids are great for treating acne & hyper-pigmentation.  Mechancial exfoliants are well appreciated by men (great before shaving) and non-acneic teens. Remember when selecting a “scrub” type of exfoliant, never use one with shells or seeds.  They have been proven to put micro-lacerations (small tears) in the skin that are not visible right away. Consult with your Esthetician to select the exfoliant best suited for you. If you have any questions or do not have an Esthetician, I will be happy to help you.

Practice Safe Sun

I recently went through a wicked bout of adult acne and was introduced to Sherilyn Rhymes. Her facials and skin care advice saved me and I’m so happy to have her as part of the BI family. My people, listen up!

-KC

I want to remind everyone to PRACTICE SAFE SUN! Yes it is more important in the summer, but sunscreen should be worn all year round. Apply a “full or broad spectrum” sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher DAILY to any area of your body not covered by clothing. Remember to reapply if you perspire or go into the water. Yes even when it is raining and yes people of color too!  As soon as the sun rises, whether it is actually sunny or not, the damaging UVA & UVB rays are out there. Also, those fluorescent lights in your office have UV (Ultra Violet) rays too.  Skin cancer is an equal opportunity disease; no one is exempt.  Yet it is the ONLY cancer that is 100% preventable. And for all of you Divas and Divos out there, guess what your number one anti-aging product is?  You guessed it, sunscreen. Consult with your Esthetician on the proper sun protection product for your skin.  If you have any questions or do not have an Esthetician, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.
