LA EVENTS: We Are All Still Trayvon!

WE ARE ALL STILL TRAYVON!

Take to the Streets!  Wear Hoodies!  Show Your Outrage!

One year since the murder of Trayvon Martin. One year since a self-styled vigilante, wannabe cop named George Zimmerman saw Trayvon’s Black skin and his hoodie and decided he “must be up to no good.” One year since Zimmerman gunned Trayvon down. One year since the cops in Sanford, Florida, found Zimmerman standing over Trayvon’s dead body and walked him into and out of the police station, letting the killer go free. And still, no justice.

The struggle for justice for Trayvon Martin is at a critical juncture. The trial of Trayvon’s killer is scheduled for June, but there is a real danger that the system will use Florida’s outrageous “Stand Your Ground” law to let Zimmerman go free. In the context of a system that stands in large part on white supremacy, “Stand Your Ground”-type laws that have been passed in more than half the states are basically lynching-enabling laws. They are unjust and illegitimate. The Florida law says a person is justified in the use of deadly force and does not have a duty to retreat if “He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony.”

On February 26, it is critical that people act!  Take pictures of yourself and others wearing hoodies and acting to say NO MORE and send them to:revolution.reports@yahoo.com and to stopmassincarceration@gmail.com.

Also, read the interview with Carl Dix:  What’s at Stake in the Fight for Justice for Trayvon Martin.

LA EVENTS: Miranda’s 13th Annual Xmas Party: Gowns, Coats, and Converse

This event is LA Baby-specific.

It’s that time of year again! Time to celebrate the holidays with great music provided by our own DJ Vicious Lee, dancing, a whole lot of friends (new and old), and a little charity to benefit our great city.

Saturday, December 15, 2012
9-2am
Varsity Night Club

6311 Wilshire Blvd. (corner of Crescent Heights and Wilshire)
Los Angeles, CA

No Cover All Night

Dress Code:

Ladies: Imagine a fly dress (cocktail or gown), hair done, nails did and a SHINY PAIR OF CONVERSE…(no reason not to dance all night in these LA made classics)

Fellas: Imagine a sport coat, dope shirt (tee or other), jeans and your CLOWNIN’ ASS CONVERSE. Hey you never get to wear them to a club any other time…but the coat makes us ladies not feel over dressed 🙂

This dress code of course is not mandatory but like Halloween you don’t want to be the one not in costume!

Bring a donation for homeless children:
Toys, Canned Goods, Socks (new), toothbrushes, gift cards, etc. If you are feeling extra generous throw your (probably new) converse in the box and really make some kids day.

These donations will benefit the Midnight Mission in Downtown Los Angeles directly helping homeless children.

So come one, come all, and let’s get this party started!!!

LA EVENTS: Kiss N’ Grind & M.A.C.

LA Babies, we know there is no shortage of events in Los Angeles on any given weekend, and of course a holiday weekend brings its own spice to the city. However, there are two that we must bring to your attention:

Kiss N’ Grind Black Friday edition: The fam is podcasting for Black Friday, but don’t let us stop you. LA’s premiere party is doing it big this weekend at the Vanguard in Hollywood! This time the guest DJ is none other than the legendary Ali Shaheed Muhammed from A Tribe Called Quest. $15 presale tickets are available until noon on November 21st; after that tickets are $20 at the door. And as always, this event is curated by none other than Vikter Duplaix!

M.A.C: This is a party that we look forward to becoming regular attendees to. M.A.C. or the Modern Audio Collective, which is comprised of Dam-Funk, J-Logic, and Garth Trinidad, with special guest Talib Kweli is going down at the Del Monte Speakeasy in Venice! $15 cover all night with DJ sets and live performances. This set of musicians is guaranteed to please so we’d suggest early arrival to this event!

There are no excuses to working off that Thanksgiving meal this weekend! Get your body rock on and we will see you on the dance floor!

LA EVENTS: 10 Torn Layers of Silk

10 Torn Layers of Silk is a play written in Choreopoem format (a choreopoem is a form of dramatic expression that combines poetry and dance. the term was first coined in 1975 by Ntozake Shange in a innovative piece, presented in a confrontational, ‘in your face’ style, is a precursor to choreopoem, spoken word, and music.

Presented by Journey, an organization that embraces multicultural women from all walks of life, this thought provoking play is written by Makresha M. Reneau and Aisha Duncan. Based on true life stories of 10 women of Journey who have transformed liked butterflies and have chosen to share with audiences in both theatre and self-published book: 10 Torn Layers of Silk ‘ Journey from Fear to Faith’.

Revealing deep secrets of their past and shedding the sour layers of skin that have defined their lives on this Journey are: Aisha Duncan, Charli Taylor, Darline Dupree, Thea Austin, Tanya Stanford, Toushonta Hogan, Felicia Stinson, Rebecca Bell, Kumesha Driver and Deborah Magbie. This play leaves the audience with the thought that ,“today is Now and yesterday is a memory that has replaced healing and time.”
