Eating Organically

I completed my 15-day fast, and to be quite honest, I snuck some hummus in there around day 12. Overall, I’m proud of my accomplishment because more than anything, I “get” how much control I have over my food choices and that cravings are evil tricks of the mind.

Since then I have committed to shopping and therefore eating organically. It has not been as hard as I imagined, but it demands that I organize my time well in order to cook more often. It also means more meatless meals, which is an adjustment for my family, but they are taking it all in stride.

Folks often associate an organic diet with a huge budget, and although  grocery store prices are marked up, I have found the best resource in my local farmer’s market. Buying it direct saves money and you will find tons of seasonal produce and other groceries, including eggs, breads and grains. For those things I can’t find at the farmer’s market, I’m leaning on Simply WholesomeSprouts and Trader Joe’s to provide.

I’m three days shy of making this diet change a 21-day habit and I’m looking forward to what I discover about myself, my body and the healing nature of the foods I’m eating. As for my skin? It’s on its way and I believe as long as I stay consistent, I’ll see the progress I want.

Anti-Aging: Environmental/Free Radical Damage

Environmental/Free Radical Damage is responsible for 90% of the skins aging and contributes to fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and elasticity, uneven skin tone and age spots. To combat this kind of aging choose  products that contain:  Antioxidant Actives. Antioxidant Actives include:  Vitamins C & E which are essential for tissue repair & to strengthen the skin’s natural defenses. Enzymes of Melon & Co-Q10 neutralize free radicals & stimulate the skin’s metabolism. Peptides like Carnosine, Matrixyl & Demaxyl, increase collagen/elastin production & prevent cell wall damage. Minerals such as Eukarion 134 mimic the body’s own defense enzymes to detoxify the effects of free radicals or stress. Polyphenols of Castaline prevent the deterioration of collagen/elastin & increase cellular energy. Consult with your Esthetician to select the products best suited for you. If you don’t have an Esthetician, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

Skin Atony (Sagging)

Skin Atony is defined by a sagging or drooping of the skin.  It is most common on the lower half of the face, but can also be present in the brow area. Choose professional treatments and products that firm, tighten, lift, hydrate and stimulate.  Ingredients to look for: Sweet Almond Oil & Wheat Proteins lift & firm.  Aosa Algae protects collagen & elastin. Glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s) hydrate. Caffeine, Coenzyme A & Chinese Herb Exract address what is commonly referred to as “Turkey Neck” by stimulating cell energy & draining idle fat cells, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) acts as an anti-oxidant. Matrixyl (Palmitoyl Pentapeptide) reduces fine lines/wrinkles. Consult with your Esthetician to select the products best suited for you. If you don’t have an Esthetician, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

Hormonal Aging

Hormones cause significant changes in the skin; however, there are specific ingredients that will address each of these changes.  The skin becomes more fragile, making it drier and more dehydrated and the barrier function becomes impaired.  Diminished estrogen causes the skin to lose tone.  Increased testosterone causes facial hair and breakouts. The solution:  Use products that contain active ingredients that redensify fragile skin (Padina Pavonica stimulates calcium production & water reservoirs), alleviate dry skin (Soy & Wild Yam), hydrate and restore barrier function (Collaxyl stimulates water reservoirs & the skin repair process). Products must also contain ingredients that mimic the action of estrogen (Iris Florentina) in the skin to preserve the tone and regulate the extra testosterone, thus decreasing facial hair and hormonal breakouts. Consult with your Esthetician to select the products best suited for you. If you don’t have an Esthetician, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

On The Subject Of Anti-Aging Products

All anti-aging products are not equal.  The anti-aging category is a huge umbrella.  There are different ingredients that address different concerns.  The areas where we show our age the most are the, decollete (chest), throat, hands and the eyes. In the next several weeks, I will break down the various components of the Anti-Aging category for you:

THE EYES HAVE IT: The skin around the eyes is six (6) times thinner than the skin on the rest of the face.  DARK CIRCLES – look for an eye cream with Vitamin K and the peptide Haloxyl.  hese ingredients improve microcirculation, help to strengthen fragile or damaged capillaries and reduce dark rings under the eyes.  PUFFINESS – look for an eye cream that contains Caffeine and the peptide Eyeliss.  These ingredients drain, improve microcirculation, increase the strength of capillaries and reduce puffiness.   EXPRESSION LINES AND WRINKLES – look for an eye cream with the peptides Argireline & Myoxinol.  They work together synergistically providing a myo-relaxing action to reduce expression lines and reduce the appearance of lines & wrinkles.  You also want the peptide Matrixyl. This corrects wrinkles by introducing a small fragment of collagen into the skin thus stimulating the production of collagen by more than 200%. Consult with your Esthetician to select the eye product best for you. If you don’t have an Esthetician, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

There Is An Art To Properly Cleansing Your Face

The majority of people are not getting their faces clean. They throw a little cleanser on, lightly move it around with their fingertips, then rinse it off.  And they are only doing this once a day. To ensure that your face is properly cleansed a pH balanced cleanser (milk or gel) for your skin type and/or skin condition should be used twice a day.  If you wear make-up, a double cleanse should be done at night. The first cleanse will remove oil & dirt, the second cleanse will remove make-up. A washcloth or facial sponge should be used to remove the cleanser to ensure that your face is really clean.  Think of it this way…would your floors get clean without using a mop? Remember to launder your washcloth or facial sponge in hot water at least twice a week to kill bacteria.

Exfoliate!

The most underestimated step in the home skin care regimen is exfoliation.  In addition to being the number two anti-aging product, dermatological studies have shown that proper exfoliation aids in getting rid of pre-cancerous surface skin cells.  There are three types of exfoliants:  Enzymes, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) and mechanical (scrubs). Enzymatic exoliants are good for sensitive skin & for use around the eyes.  Hydroxy Acids are great for treating acne & hyper-pigmentation.  Mechancial exfoliants are well appreciated by men (great before shaving) and non-acneic teens. Remember when selecting a “scrub” type of exfoliant, never use one with shells or seeds.  They have been proven to put micro-lacerations (small tears) in the skin that are not visible right away. Consult with your Esthetician to select the exfoliant best suited for you. If you have any questions or do not have an Esthetician, I will be happy to help you.

Practice Safe Sun

I recently went through a wicked bout of adult acne and was introduced to Sherilyn Rhymes. Her facials and skin care advice saved me and I’m so happy to have her as part of the BI family. My people, listen up!

I want to remind everyone to PRACTICE SAFE SUN! Yes it is more important in the summer, but sunscreen should be worn all year round. Apply a “full or broad spectrum” sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher DAILY to any area of your body not covered by clothing. Remember to reapply if you perspire or go into the water. Yes even when it is raining and yes people of color too!  As soon as the sun rises, whether it is actually sunny or not, the damaging UVA & UVB rays are out there. Also, those fluorescent lights in your office have UV (Ultra Violet) rays too.  Skin cancer is an equal opportunity disease; no one is exempt.  Yet it is the ONLY cancer that is 100% preventable. And for all of you Divas and Divos out there, guess what your number one anti-aging product is?  You guessed it, sunscreen. Consult with your Esthetician on the proper sun protection product for your skin.  If you have any questions or do not have an Esthetician, please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help you.

Let’s Face It: Skincare Tips for all Ages

From the on-set of pubescent acne to the wisdom lines of middle age, all women can have radiant skin. Here are few tips to maintain a healthy glow through the decades:

3 of a Kind

Look for a 3-step cleansing system to clean, tone (exfoliate) and moisturize your face according to your skin type. Most major cosmetics lines carry a 3 or 4 step cleansing system.

Rays today, Lines tomorrow

Always use sunscreen. Protect your skin against harmful UVB/UVA rays to ward off signs of premature aging. Choose a daily moisturizer with a SPF of at least 15.

You are what you Eat

Stay away from fried food and any food that could potentially cause a breakout. Instead choose a healthy snack like strawberries, blackberries or plums that are rich in anti-oxidants that may soothe irritated skin. Add walnuts and salmon to your diet, both contain Omega-3 fatty acids, which help maintain your skin’s natural oils for a more youthful appearance.

Get to Steppin’

Want beautiful skin? Get moving! Exercise coupled with at least eight glasses of water is one of the best ways to improve your complexion. Try walking, swimming or biking to get your blood flowing to speed-up the rate of skin cell-turnover leaving you with newer, healthier skin cells on your facial surface.

TEENS

Raging hormones are usually to blame for acne in teens. Between the ages of 13-17, oil glands may be producing too much oil causing pimples to appear. Teens with acne should be sure to cleanse with a mild cleanser twice a day. The cleanser should contain acne-fighting meds like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Be sure all products are oil-free and “non-comedogenic” (does not clog pores). If breakouts persist, consult a dermatologist.

20’s

It is always tempting to go to sleep in makeup after a long night but suppress the urge. Keep non-scented baby wipes or makeup remover wipes on your nightstand. At least you will remove the surface makeup, dirt and oil that will surely turn into a pimple the next morning. The fast life of your twenties will definitely show on your face in your thirties if precautions are not taken.

30’s

Now is the time to preserve the skin that will carry you through middle age. In addition to using a 3 or 4-step system, thirty-somethings should add an eye cream in the day as well as before bed. Adding moisture to the eye area will decrease the chances of “crows feet” lines around the eyes. A separate moisturizer for the eyes is important because the skin in the eye area is much thinner. Facial creams can sometimes be too harsh.

40’s

By the time you reach your forties, your skin has undoubtedly gone through several phases. You may notice that your skin has become increasingly drier over the years. Now is the time to add a night cream with a thicker consistency to replenish the natural oils that have been lost. This may also be a time to consider cosmetic fillers like Botox or Restylane to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

50’s and Beyond

Now that you have mastered the skin care regimens of previous decades, you may opt to lighten areas of hyperpigmentation or age-spots by using a skin brightening system. Acne may also once again become and issue due to the fluctuation of hormones in menopause. Be sure to see a dermatologist if acne persists.
