LA EVENTS: Low End Theory

Low End Theory :: Tonight, June 30th 2010

This Wednesday, June 30th we are proud to present another night of sublime subharmonics at Low End Theory. We’re back to the cutting edge this week, featuring a stunning array of talent. Matthewdavid will take the headline slot, preceded by the illustrious P.U.D.G.E. Opening set by new discovery Vapor Mache. Residents Daddy Kev, Nobody, D-Styles and Nocando are on deck for soundwave demolition duty (GLK is in Europe). Early arrival is always recommended for easy entry at Low End Theory:

MATTHEWDAVID
[Brainfeeder]
It is indeed a pleasure for us to bring you a close encounter with one of L.A.’s most fabled new talents. Matthewdavid’s Spills EP on Plug Research exposed him to the masses, while his co-production on Flying Lotus’ Los Angeles cemented his rep even further. His Leaving Records imprint is among L.A.’s most essential. Rumor has it that Matthewdavid is nearing completion on his Brainfeeder debut, so expect to hear his newest beat creations at this week’s Low End Theory.

P.U.D.G.E.
[Ramp Recordings]
Back at Low End for his second set of 2010, P.U.D.G.E. has been making major waves with his astounding beats and rhymes. He’s rocked just about every beat showcase in the city, impressing countless fans. He recently ignited the All City L.A. ten-inch series, and just dropped Idiot Box on London’s Ramp Recordings. A true Low End favorite, don’t miss this performance.

As well as your Resident DJs

DADDY KEV
[Alpha Pup]
Batting first on the Low End Theory lineup is legendary producer and label boss Daddy Kev. As a producer and engineer, he’s spent the last decade crafting classics for the likes of AWOL One, Busdriver, The Grouch, Sage Francis, Mix Master Mike, Abstract Rude, D-Styles, Freestyle Fellowship, The Shape Shifters and many more. His DJ sets are a high-tech affair with Kev primarily engaged in live remixes, slicing experimental beats and hip-hop classics to shreds.

NOBODY
[Plug Research]
From his adventures on the road with Mars Volta and Prefuse 73, to his production and remixes for Postal Service, Mystic Chords of Memory and Busdriver, coupled with his own solo work on labels such as Rough Trade and Plug Research, Nobody is a living tour de force of creative genius.

THE GASLAMP KILLER
[Low End Theory]
Over the course of the last few years, Gaslamp Killer has established a solid rep for devastating beats and intricate cuts. This nomadic West Coaster has steadily smashed the scene from San Diego to Los Angeles to San Francisco, earning the respect of heavyweight players in the process. Bear witness to one of his epic sets and see what the buzz is all about.

D-STYLES
[Funkshitup]
His virtuoso skills on the turntables have been compared to that of Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane. As a former member of Invisibl Skratch Piklz and Beat Junkies, he toured the globe, helping transform turntablism into a global phenomenon. Now, the legendary D-Styles is back on the frontlines of underground culture, shredding your soul every week at Low End Theory.

LA EVENTS: Soulnic

What is SOULNIC©?

SOULNIC© is a Soul Music Picnic that will take place at LA’s historic Griffith Park. As the first event of its kind in Los Angeles, SOULNIC© will set out to follow in the tradition of several, successful Soulful House Music picnics that have been taking place annually in cities like Chicago, New York and Atlanta for several years. However, our purpose for this event will transcend music culture and impact the lives of youth through our commitment to raise money for The Lula Washington Dance Theatre.

WHEN: Saturday, June 26,2010 10:00 AM – Sunset

WHERE: GRIFFITH PARK (Crystal Springs Picnic Area)

WE’LL BRING: Incredible DJs (with a few surprises),10,000 watts of sound, Volleyball, playground for the kids, extra DJ equipment for you to play around on courtesy of Numark and much more!

YOU BRING: The Family, Friends, Co-workers, BBQ Grills (but we’ll have a few), Food, Drinks (NO ALCOHOL), Blankets, Sunscreen, and anything else that will make you comfortable being outdoors.

Dogs are welcome, but MUST be on a leash. The Park Rangers will surely “unleash” a hefty fine on you for not having your dog on a leash. On that note, maybe you should just come and relax without your little pooch.
DIRECTIONS:

• Start from the intersection of Los Feliz Blvd. and Riverside Drive. It’s the intersection with the big fountain, right off the Los Feliz exit of the 5 freeway.
• Riverside Drive becomes Crystal Springs Drive North of Los Feliz. So take Crystal Springs Drive North into Griffith Park.
• Follow the signs that say “SOULNIC” (yes, it’s that easy)

NO WINE, BEER OR LIQUOR

The Park Rangers are REAL Park Rangers/Police. Don’t ruin your good time by giving them a reason to check your coolers and issue you a ticket for having alcohol on park grounds. This is a rare family event that we’d like to keep going for years to come so please be responsible and respectful of this simple rule.

ANY QUESTIONS? CALL: 800.273.6672

Producing the event is Extra Mild Sauce
Extra Mild Sauce™ (“EMS”) is one of the few organizations in Los Angeles, CA committed to providing an outdoor experience that is focused on soulful music, dance and its musicians. Since music and arts programs have been cut from our schools and with so few soul music bands signed to major record labels today (compared to the 70s and 80s), we found it necessary, if not overdue, to raise awareness through an event that is community-based and philanthropic. The result is the beginning of, what we hope to be, an annual summer event called SOULNIC©.

LA EVENTS: Soul Sessions

Happy Juneteenth!

June 19th marks the 145th anniversary of the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery known as Juneteenth.  Taken from the Juneteenth.com website, here are some historical facts about this day:

Though Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had minimal immediate effect on most slaves’ day-to-day lives, particularly in Texas. Texas was resistant to the Emancipation Proclamation, and though slavery was very prevalent in East Texas, it was not as common in the Western areas of Texas, particularly the Hill Country, where most German-Americans were opposed to the practice. Juneteenth commemorates June 18 and 19, 1865. June 18 is the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. On June 19, 1865, legend has it while standing on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa, Granger read the contents of “General Order No. 3”:

The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.

That day has since become known as Juneteenth, a name derived from a portmanteau of the words June and nineteenth.

Former slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets with jubilant celebrations. Juneteenth celebrations began in Texas the following year. Across many parts of Texas, freed people pooled their funds to purchase land specifically for their communities’ increasingly large Juneteenth gatherings — including Houston’s Emancipation Park, Mexia’s Booker T. Washington Park, and Emancipation Park in Austin.

As Juneteenth is a World Wide Celebration, many events will be taking place in Los Angeles today. Click here to find an event near you.

Happy Juneteenth!!!
